#2:
Travesía marítima y terrestre hacia el monte Stoppani

Published at 13:51
Dispatch created from web

Harry Brito

ENGLISH VERSION

Hello everyone!

In October we will travel to Tierra del Fuego to try the first ascent of Mount Stoppani, a remote mountain surrounded by glaciers, fjords and cold wildforest.

To get closer to its summit, we will sail in kayak from Caleta Maria to the bottom of Contraalmirante Cuevas fjord, which penetrates deep into the northern slopes of Cordillera Darwin. From there we will try the summit of the "Universidad de Magallanes" (University of Magallanes) mountain, to accede by that route to the high zone of Darwin Range glaciers. We will advance through unexplored lands almost from the moment we leave, behind the beaches of the Cuevas fjord.

Entering the Ice Field, we will continue East, linking several virgin summits, including Mount "Dalla Vedova. At the end of that journey we expect to reach the summit of Mount Stoppani, the main purpose of our expedition.

The area where we will make the expedition is one of the least explored sites of Darwin Range, and corresponds to the high areas (above 5000 ft.) of the glaciers "Cuevas", "Della Vedova", "New Zealand" and "Stoppani". All of the summits located within this area are virgin. The only recorded passage of these glaciers was from the mountain group of the French Army (Groupe Militaire de Haute Montagne, GMHM, 2011).

With this expedition we hope to open and register an access route to the area, which is being subject to growing scientific interest.

Our expedition is supported by the “Escuela de Ingeniería en Expediciones y Ecoturismo” from Universidad San Sebastián, Plantae Foundation and The New York Explorers Club, from which we will be carrying the Flag.

We will be sending periodic reports through this tracking page.

Greetings,

Harry Brito
