We started out early this morning to beat the rush to the Badlands. Bruce
Springsteen knocked the sleep out of our eyes with his fiery song bearing
the National Park’s name. The scenery was impressive, especially given how
it comes out of nowhere after 100s of miles of open grasslands. It was
great to get a few short hikes in today.

Next we drove through Wall, SD… the 300+ miles of ads for its famed drug
store wore us down and we went to take a look. Impressively we escaped
without spending a nickel. There are tons of funny nick nacks and western
paraphernalia there. On the way out we noticed a rodeo going on along the
side of the highway. Turns out it was the Pennington County 4-H Rodeo.
Kids 8-18 competed in barrel racing, calf roping and more. It was awesome
to watch... a totally different lifestyle. Next on to Mt. Rushmore in the
Black Hills (worst $10 spent on the trip thus far), a great drive through
Custer State Park (with buffalos!) and on to our campsite in Wyoming (feels
great to be camping).

Tomorrow we plan to drive up near Billings, MT.
