Dispatch #7

Yesterday was a marathon on the road…. 10 hours from KC, through Iowa and
across South Dakota to Kadoka, SD. The GPS had us arriving at 10pm, which
we thought was reasonable, but failed to realize there is a switch to
Mountain Standard Time about 3/4 of the way through the plains. Nonetheless,
we managed a stop at Edgars in Elk Point, SD along the way. Roadfood came
through again! This time it was with an old-fashioned soda fountain. We’re
not talking fill up your 64 oz. cup with coca-cola at 7-11, but the real
deal. The “attendant” mixed root beer syrup, chocolate syrup and ice cream
to make a “proper base.” Then added soda water (fast, then slow), then more
ice cream, whipped cream and a cherry. We were kids in a candy store. That
plus a phosphate lemon drink and we were golden!

The next morning we headed out for the Badlands and the Black Hills.
