Whitefish, MT is an outdoor playground! Willie Mac treated us to four
amazing days hiking in Glacier National Park, wake surfing on Whitefish
Lake, scenic drives, farmer's markets and great restaurants. There is also
golf, mountain biking, fly fishing, rock climbing... everything. You could
spend a lot of time there (plus it stays light out until after 10pm!).
In Glacier, we hiked 8 miles round trip to Granite Park Chalet... the route
took us through prime Grizzly territory so we were belting out "Dayyy-OOO"
and "Heyyyy Bearrr" around every turn. Luckily no encounters, but we ran
into a couple hikers that saw a grizzly up close on a different trail. The
hike climbed 2200 feet and the last 45 minutes was on snow that had yet to
melt (3 feet in some areas!). The views were absolutely spectacular.
Someday maybe we will stay at the Chalet, but you need to book it a year in
advance! On a different day, we drove the entire Going-to-the-Sun Road,
which provided fantastic views and more short hikes.
Back in Whitefish, Will took us out on his boat and taught us to wake surf.
Totally cool. Basically you take a surfboard out behind a motorboat and
surf the wake without the aid of the rope. Will made it look simple...
taking a beer with him for a 5 minute ride! Chris started with the ski rope
(just like wake boarding), but by day 2 was able to catch a hands free ride
for 90 seconds! We had a blast in Whitefish. It is easy to see why Will
and others love living there.
Today we drove to Stanley, ID. Fly fishing tomorrow and then the raft trip
starts Monday!
We are also including a few pictures of barns that we have seen along the
way. We both have a soft spot for old barns.
